So Hits Daily Double has posted its mid week projections, which are usually pretty close to accurate and it seems as if Wale will debut with his first #1 album. The Gifted is on track to do about 150k albums first week. Although this is down a bit from the 165k his previous album Ambition did in its first week, the #1 bow should be seen as a major win for the MMG artist, especially when considering that his current single (Love Hate Thing) has not yet taken off (but soon will). That being said it is still pretty crazy to think that his contemporary J.Cole’s Born Sinner did roughly double that amount last week.
What is even more surprising to me is that it looks as if Cole’s Born Sinner will actually sell more than Kanye West’s Yeezus in its second week. Considering the very positive reviews and the intentional lack of promotion pre June 18th, I figured Kanye was poised to have solid 2nd week sales. However there is still no video or song on radio to promote the album, so I guess it is understandable. One has to wonder if these (what must be) disappointing sales for Kanye will lead Jay-Z to alter some of his promotional plans, maybe he’ll even put out a single?
Wale (Atlantic) 140-150k
J. Cole (Roc Nation/Columbia) 90-95k
Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam/IDJ) 70-75k
Mac Miller (Rostrum) 23-26k
